Welcome to the new Table year

Solihull Round Table Chairman 2011 - Paul Jennings

It was as proud moment for me when, at the AGM in April 2011, I became the 62nd Chairman of Solihull Round Table after being a member of Solihull for 5 years.

I originally joined the Round Table movement 8 years ago in Winchester where I was living at the time. I was chatting with a friend in our local pub and he said to me ‘I’m off go-karting with a load of guys, do you fancy coming along?’ . I agreed and I was hooked. Over the next few months I learned more about Winchester Round Table and got myself involved with the organisation of their Bonfire and Fireworks display along with taking part in activities such as clay pigeon shooting and LaserQuest.

It was not long before I realised that I wanted to be part of this truly global organisation and signed up. I was inducted to Winchester Round Table as part of Wine Tasting Night. I spent another few years at Winchester, getting involved with international trips and charity events such as taking over the local cinema for a Gala Premier Film night.

There is an old adage that goes the more you put in the more you get out’, that cannot be said enough of being part of Round Table. Round Table has given me the opportunity to develop leadership and organisational skills which I have taken into my professional career.

It was with mixed feelings that I announced to Winchester that I was moving to Solihull, sad that I was leaving a great bunch of guys of which I have made many friends, but joyful in the fact that I was moving back to my home town for a great opportunity in the professional and home life.

It was with no hesitation that I contacted Solihull Round Table and told them that I was coming and could I meet up. The chairman and a number of members arranged to meet me in a local bar and tell me about Solihull Round Table and some of the activities that it does. As soon as I got home I was filling in my transfer forms to become officially a member of Solihull Round Table.

5 years later I am now the Chairman of Solihull Round Table and I have already had the honour of inducting 2 new members to Solihull and, quite by chance, meeting the Chief Executive of Round Table. I am looking forward to a fantastic year, with a fantastic Table.

I have now updated the Diary Page of the website so you can see what we’re up to for the next 12 months and if you’re interested in coming along – let me know!

We Did, We Do, YOU CAN!

The smoke clears – Fireworks 2009

11 11 2009

Fireworks 2009

Fireworks 2009

Saturday the 7th November 2009 came and went with a GREAT BIG BANG.

Carlos from Smooth Radio

The free fireworks display held by Solihull Round Table attracted approximately 4,000 people and raised ~£3,000 for charity. Thank you to all of you who came and made the night so wonderful, the atmosphere was great and Carlos from Smooth Radio really got the crowd going.

6 months ago a very different story was emerging.

Last’s years display proved to be a tipping point for Solihull Round Table and some serious decisions had to be made regarding the future of the display. The amount of charity money raised proved to be very low and the attendance on the night was also poor.

Over the previous few years a variety of marketing and promotion techniques were employed to publicise the event and changes to the format of the evening also were tried.  However the rot was setting in and no matter how hard we tried or whatever we changed the numbers were falling, the costs were going up and the donations to charity were going down. We came to the conclusion that the competition for fireworks in Solihull was too great even for such an established display as the Round Table one.

A new proposal

At a very heated meeting it was clear that something had to change or we would have to cancel fireworks for the first time in over 30 years.  It was agreed that a totally new format would be required which was radically different from previous years. For inspiration we looked to our Round Table colleagues across the country who also put on major displays and took their ideas and made it our own.

The proposal was that we would have a free display, paid for by sponsorship, and by working with Solihull Council would hold it in Tudor Grange park which was a much larger venue that before. In addition we decided to limit costs where ever possible and have the event earlier so that we could attract more people which would also allow them to support their usual fireworks event later in the evening.

A team of tablers was formed who worked to finalise the plans and raise the sponsorship. These volunteers worked extremely hard giving up many days of their own time through meetings with the fire service, the police, the council, sponsors and firework companies – even down to walking around Solihull with placards around their neck’s promoting the event!

A marketing plan was put into place and we pleaded with businesses and the public to help support us and by September we felt that we were in a position to agree to go ahead with the display. From that point onwards the marketing switched gear to promotion and we pushed the event in as many different ways as we felt it was possible to make sure that everyone had the chance to know about it.

The crowd at Fireworks 2009

The crowd at Fireworks 2009

The results were amazing! Our biggest risk was that no one would show up and the whole event would be a failure, luckily this never happened. We were lucky enough to have wonderful weather which helped entice a huge crowd to the display. Judging from how generously the crowd supported us we can only conclude that they enjoyed the show.

Feedback

I would like to invite your feedback regarding the display in comments below – but please remember that this was a free event, put on by volunteers and that it was a new venture. I invite constructive criticism – but I will delete any personal or offensive remarks.

Thank you again to all of you who supported the event in any way.

Solihull RT.

Most enjoyable Table event:  That’s tough.  Either my first National Sporting Weekend (Cardiff 2003) or my involvement with Euro-meetings.

Table has given me: Organisation and planning skills, but also I am generally quite shy, but in table everyone is a friend.

Best Table International Trip:  Finland, June 2007 – my first RT international trip – the sun never set on that party – as our ‘T’ shirts said – ‘We came in search of the midnight sun – but all we found was the crack of Dawn’  Skiing in Sweden also awesome (well the après ski anyway)

Music: I like most stuff –Jazz, blues, classical, rock / pop (Beatles to Massive attack / Rolling Stones to Joss Stone)

Artiste:  Don’t really have one, but Prince (or sign thingy what ever he calls him self) and U2 are definitely up there

Karaoke choice: “Sitting on the dock of the bay” or “Under the boardwalk”

Drive: Audi TT

Kids:  None that I am aware of / would admit too!

Favourites:

Holiday Location:  Italy

Favourite sport:

  Rugby

TV Series: Heroes & The Simpsons

Comedian: Jimmy Carr

Gadet: Thermal Imaging stuff at work.

What makes Table “special”?  The members – it’s being part of something, almost a collective, we each have our own ways and approaches – but all towards the same goal.  And it really is true, the more you get involved, the more you get out of it.

Shhhh! – Don’t tell anyone, it’s a Secret!

30 07 2009

Before you read any further you must promise to keep this to yourself. Have you promised…?, then carry on!

There is a secret organisation in Solihull, that small unassuming town in the midlands. Who would have thought it..?

Guys on a boat

There are a group on men aged between 18 and 45 who enjoy themselves! (don’t tell anyone) They go to the pub, eat meals out, go and visit places, try new things take part in competitions and generally have a good time.

Santa Claus comes to Solihull

Santa Comes to Solihull

In addition they also raise money for charities by providing an annual fireworks display in the town centre. They also have close links with Santa Claus and take him around the town collecting money for charities.

I intend to expose this secret organisation through the power of the web. How dare these ordinary people, like you and me, have fun, develop friendships and take part in fund-raising.

Read the Tales of Solihull Round Table to find out more – but remember it’s a secret!
